Depending on my configuration, the sidebar can contain basic shapes, connectors, network symbols, UML elements, BPMN elements, or other specialized libraries. I can also use Search Shapes to find specific elements.
The Shapes view acts as the main library for the visual building blocks of my diagram.
If I close the sidebar, my diagram remains unchanged. I only hide the tools for selecting new shapes.
How to Activate the Shapes View in draw.io
I can restore the Shapes view directly from the main menu.
First, I open View in the menu bar. Then, I select Shapes.
If the Shapes view is active, draw.io displays a check mark next to the menu entry. If it is hidden, selecting Shapes activates it again.
I can therefore restore the Shapes view through View > Shapes.

The menu also shows the keyboard shortcut:
Ctrl+Shift+K
Therefore, I can use the shortcut instead of opening the menu when I want to toggle the Shapes view quickly.
What Happens After I Activate the Shapes View?
After activation, draw.io displays the Shapes sidebar on the left side of the editor.
The exact content depends on the libraries I have enabled. For example, my sidebar can contain:
- Search Shapes
- Scratchpad
- General
- specialized shape libraries
- More Shapes
I can then drag a shape from the sidebar directly onto the canvas.

Once the sidebar appears, I can immediately browse, search, and drag shapes into my diagram.
How I Add More Shape Libraries
The standard Shapes view does not need to contain every available library.
If I need additional symbols, I select More Shapes at the bottom of the sidebar. From there, I can enable libraries for specific modeling purposes.
For example, I may add libraries for UML, BPMN, network diagrams, flowcharts, software architecture, or other technical diagrams.
Therefore, I keep only the libraries that I actually need. This makes the sidebar easier to navigate.
Shapes View vs. Search Shapes
I distinguish between the complete Shapes view and the Search Shapes function.
The Shapes view contains the libraries and categories available to me. Search Shapes is one function within that sidebar. It helps me find a particular shape without browsing several libraries manually.
Consequently, if the entire left sidebar has disappeared, activating Search Shapes alone does not solve the underlying problem. I need to activate Shapes.
If the complete shape library is missing, I use View > Shapes or Ctrl+Shift+K.
